A mint mark on a coin or the lack of one tells where the coin was minted. On the Morgan dollar it is located near the bottom below the wreath. The 1921 is very common and dealers pay $11-$13 for them. The ones with a mint mark (D or S) are worth a little more in higher grades. If the U.S. had not printed a lot of silver certificates in 1921 the Morgan dollar would not have been made. They stopped making them in 1904 and the mint around 1912 destroyed the Morgan Dollar master hub. They also melted a lot of silver dollars during the First World War so when the Silver certificates came out, they did not have enough silver dollars to back the notes. They had to make a new hub so the 1921 Morgan is a little different to the ones before then. The mintage’s were high with 44,690,000 minted at Philadelphia mint- no mint mark. 20,345,000 at the Denver mint (D) & 21,695,000 at the San Franciso mint (S). You have an interesting piece of history and as time goes bu it’s value will go up.
