I don’t write about coins, but sure have collected them for a long time, however he is right, you do not clean coins. If you do, the grading service you send it too, will return it ungraded or with the word cleaned on the label. You will ruin their value for the nephews. If the coins are some of the rare date Morgans you can send them to Numismatic Conservation Service to have them clean the coins if they can. The price is rather steep. You can get their site by putting their name into google. Actually, all collector coins should be handled with clean white cotton gloves. They make a light weight pair for coin handling. Handle by the edge is a yes no thing and can cause toning to that part of the coin. The oil and vinegar from an Italian sub does wonders to the edge of a coin. Just send them in uncleaned, if they are not real rare dates.

Never clean a coin…usually knocks the value down by at least %50 if not more…..unless it is a rare date or exceptional grade..slabbing would be a waste of money….

DO NOT FOLLOW THE ADVICE IN THE FIRST ANSWER ABOVE.
DO NOT CLEAN THEM!
DO NOT EVEN TOUCH THE OBVERSE OR REVERSE SIDE OF A COIN!
DO NOT USE THOSE FOLDERS WHERE YOU PUSH A COIN INTO A CARDBOARD FOLDER.
Coins should only be picked up by putting your fingers on the edge of the coin.
Sweat, natural body ‘oil’ and ANYTHING else touching a coin’s surface diminishes the coins numismatic value.
If there is dirt or some other filth on a valuable coin, take it to a numismatic businessman and have that person clean it.
